Students Injured After Falling Through Grate During Virginia Tech Tour
Ten high school students were injured Thursday after falling through a utility grate while touring the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The students, from Washington County Public Schools, were visiting the university when the incident occurred near Pamplin Hall. According to Virginia Tech officials, the group was standing on the grate when it gave way, causing them to fall approximately six feet.
Campus emergency services quickly responded to the scene. While all students were able to climb out on their own, three were transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. The remaining seven were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The university has not released details about the cause of the grate’s failure but stated that an investigation is underway to assess safety measures in the area.
Washington County school officials are coordinating with families and university staff to support the affected students.
