REAL ID Requirement for Domestic Travel Takes Effect May 7, 2025
Beginning May 7, 2025, all U.S. travelers must present a REAL ID-compliant form of identification to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities, as mandated by the U.S. Department of State and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
Acceptable forms of REAL ID include a state-issued driver’s license or identification card marked with a star symbol, indicating federal compliance. In addition to REAL ID-compliant licenses, alternative documents such as a U.S. passport book or card, a Global Entry card, a federal government-issued badge, a green card, or a military ID are also valid for travel and identification purposes.
Those planning to travel shortly before or after the May 7 deadline are urged to confirm whether their identification meets the new standards. Travelers who need to apply for or renew a passport are encouraged to do so well in advance, as processing times can take several weeks. Expedited services may be necessary for last-minute travel.
The U.S. Department of State advises the public to consider submitting passport applications during the off-peak season, typically between November and March, to avoid delays.
